A Guide to the Federal Skilled Trades Program

If you're looking for a way to immigrate to Canada, the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) Program is a popular way via Express entry. This program is specially created for skilled workers who have foreign work experience and want to move to Canada permanently. However, like every other immigration program, this too has a set of requirements for the applicant to be eligible. Here's everything you need to know.

What Are The Minimum Requirements?

Before we get into the details, let look at a summary of all the requirements.

· The applicant should meet all the required language levels for speaking, listening, ready, and writing.

· The applicant should have a minimum of 2 years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade. The work experience should be paid; any voluntary work or unpaid internships won't be counted.

· The applicant should meet the current job requirements for the skilled trade according to the National Occupational Classification.

· The applicant should also have a job offer of full-time employment or a  qualification certificate in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian authority

What Do You Need in Terms of Work Experience?

In terms of work experience, you must be working in a trade part of the Skill Level B in the Canadian National Occupational Classification. This NOC is a system used by the government to differentiate various occupations or jobs. They group them into categories based on the kind of work and responsibilities that are involved. Skill Level A, for example, focuses on professional jobs that require a degree, such as a doctor.

What Do You Need in Terms of Language Ability

Next, you will need to give a language test approved by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). If you pass this test, it will mean that you've met the minimum skill level of Canadian Language Benchmark 5 (speaking and listening) and Canadian Language Benchmark 4 (reading and writing). Keep in mind these results need to be no older than two years on the date you apply.
