Immigration is one of the fastest-growing industries in Canada, but because it's so popular, it can be difficult to find out which type of government program you should apply for. Let’s look at some of the ways you can immigrate to the country.

Express Entry Visa

This is Canada’s primary immigration pathway. It consists of three different programs: Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Federal Skilled Worker Program. If you’re eligible for any one of these, you can also apply for a PNP or Provincial Nominee Program that’s also aligned with the Express Entry. However, it’s not necessary for every PNP. Some PNPs can be managed by a province’s application system and might be suitable for people not eligible for Express Entry.

Express Entry works with a points grid. You can earn more points if you have a higher language score, at least 1 year of experience as a skilled worker, you're between the age of 20-29, and have post-secondary education. However, other factors can also raise your score, like learning French, having a job offer, or having a sibling in Canada.

Provincial Nominee Program

The PNP is mostly an option for people ineligible for Express Entry or for people who need more points for Express Entry. Except for Quebec and Nunavut, all other territories and provinces offer a PNP. The provinces and territories customize these programs to suit their population and economic growth strategies.

PNP immigration has a two-step process. First, a person can apply to the territory of the province, and once you're nominated, you can apply to the federal government.

There are two categories of PNPs: enhanced PNPs, which use the Express Entry pool to draw candidates, and base PNPs that operate independently from Express Entry.

Family sponsorship

If your family is in Canada, you can apply for family sponsorship. Canadians can easily sponsor their common-law partners and spouses, their dependent adult relatives or children, and their grandparents and parents.

However, you have to meet certain eligibility criteria before you can apply. The sponsor must justify their financial ability to provide for the immigrants. And the immigrant must pass the medical admissibility and criminal record criteria.
