If you have a permanent residence or Canadian citizenship and want to bring your family to Canada, you can apply for a family sponsorship program. The Canadian government and law-making authorities understand the need for uniting families and offer family sponsorship programs.

Any adult citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their relative to immigrate to Canada, given that the person sponsored must be a:

Spouse, conjugal partner, or a common-law partner

Parent

Grandparent

Dependent child

Nephew, niece, sibling, or a grandkid under the age of 18 who is not married and their parents have passed away

Who is a partner/spouse?

Individuals seeking sponsorship as a spouse or a partner are eligible under the following categories:

Common-law partner: at least a year of cohabitation with a conjugal relationship

Spouse: the person is legally married in their country of origin and under the laws of Canada

Conjugal partner: a conjugal relationship with your partner for at least a year where the couple was not able to live together because of any religious reasons, immigration barriers, marital status (e.g., married to another person), or sexual orientation

Dependent child

A dependent child can either be a child of the sponsor or the sponsor's spouse, given that they're under 22 years of age and don't have a spouse or a common-law partner. Children over 22 years can be considered dependent if they cannot financially support themselves due to a physical or mental condition.

Who is eligible to sponsor?

The person sponsoring should be an adult and must either have citizenship or a permanent resident in Canada. The sponsor must be living in Canada or planning to come back to Canada once the sponsored person arrives.

An adult might not sponsor their family member if they:

Are going to bankrupt soon

Are prisoned

Were sponsored by another person in the last 5 years

Have sponsored another family member before but couldn’t meet the terms
