How to Apply for a Permanent Resident Card in Canada?

Over 20,000 people moved from temporary residency to permanent residency last year in Canada, and immigration to Canada increased with over 400,000 total immigrants landing in the country. A Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) verifies your status as a permanent resident of Canada and allows you to work and move freely with a PR card.

The card must be carried with you at all times when entering and exiting Canada. You must travel internationally with your passport and PR card if you are a permanent resident.

How Do I Apply?

You will need a PR card if you are a permanent resident (including a child); you plan to leave Canada with the intention of returning via any commercial mode of transportation.

Eligibility

To apply for PR in Canada, you must first establish your eligibility for the application. You must meet all the following requirements to be eligible for a PR Card:

· be a permanent resident of Canada;

· be physically present in Canada;

· meet the residency requirement

· not be under an effective removal order;

· not be a Canadian citizen; and

· not be convicted of an offence related to the misuse of a PR Card

Documentation

A lot of paperwork goes into a Canadian PR card application. The documents you must submit with your application are outlined below:

Identification document

You will need a photocopy of your valid passport or travel document. If you do not have valid documentation, the passport or travel documents you had when you became a permanent resident will need to be submitted. If neither of these applies to you, you will need the certificate of identity or travel document issued by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada or a foreign country.

Two identical pictures taken within the last six months are also required. They will need to be placed in a small envelope with the applicant's name written at the top.

All documents must be translated into English or French, accompanied by an affidavit from the person who completed the translation.
