What is the Process of Adopting a Child in Canada?

Adoption is a legal process through which a new family takes on the permanent obligation of parenting a child. Birth parents are sometimes unable to raise children for various reasons. Around 30,000 minors in Canada's welfare system are eligible for adoption, but only 2,000 are adopted each year.

Who Can Adopt a Child?

You must be a resident to become an adoptive parent in Ontario. Single individuals and couples from any religious, ethnic, and sexual backgrounds can be adoptive parents.

One of the most significant characteristics of becoming an adoptive parent is the ability to provide a secure and caring environment for the child. When evaluating whether or not you're ready to begin the adoption process, there are several factors that you should consider.

Are you ready to have a family and make that long-term commitment? Can you care for this child in a loving home? Are you ready to become a parent? These are all valid questions potential adoptive parents must discuss.

Types of Adoption

There are various ways to bring a child home: public, private and international adoptions are the most common. There were just under 800 international adoptions in 2017 in Canada.

Public

You must apply through the Children's Aid Society and complete the entire process for public adoption. The individual(s) are subjected to a screening procedure; they are matched with a child once a social worker has approved it. You can file an application for child adoption in court with the help of the social worker, who will also guide you through the whole procedure. It's completely free.

Private

To adopt a child privately, you must choose a licensed private agency. The procedure is similar to that of the Children's Aid Society. The exception here is that you must contact a private adoption practitioner approved by the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services. The entire procedure might set you back around $25,000 in total.

International

Parents who want to adopt a child from another country must undergo two different procedures. They must first finish the adoption process in Canada and then proceed with the child's immigration to Canada.
